One of my father's jobs is to cut woods in the mountains and take them to the city of Xinyi to sell. Below, nowsdays, the kids do not look that poor.

Another job of my father is to help in the rice field and to graze the cow. I don't see any cow in below spring planting in the rice field of Baishi. Below panoramic pictures shot by ChenSS.

Looking for my father's village 扶龍白石

I only heard this Baishi name once from my father and I never knew where it was. We were always told that we were Gouzhou (高州 means High State) people. I think the reason is that Baishi (白石) and Xinyi (信宜) were under Gouzhou, a bigger city, in old time. Only recently I found Baishi on the map.

More exactly my father said FulongBaishi. Fulong (扶龍) means supporting the dragon with hand(s). For sometime, I thought he said Furong (芙蓉 means Lotus) because there is a Furong city in Malaysia. Later I found Fulong on a Chinese map. Fulong is a very sophisticated name for a poor farming village.

In Chinese way of saying, it should be BaishiFulong (Fulong of Baishi, if Fulong is a village). Why he said FulongBaishi (Baishi of Fulong), it is a mystery. I posted the question to local people. Even they are not sure and need to do researches.

民国21年编制的12个区720个乡我找不到扶龙；民国23年的保甲制合并的4个区144个乡，扶龙属四区；民国29年实行新县制，全县分4个区36个乡534个保，有白石上乡和白石南乡，没有扶龙乡（扶龙可能系保）；解放后，1950年全县分六区36个乡，白石上乡和白石南乡属五区，区公所设在白石圩；1952年数字区名改为地名区名，十区为白石区（白石上和白石南合并而成），下属19个乡，其中有扶龙乡；其后，扶龙一直都是白石的下一级建制。（信宜县志95至107页，1993年12月第一版）

没错，老一辈都是叫扶龙白石的，海外的人包括远居南洋不知情的乡亲现在写信回来也写扶龙白石。那个时代的扶龙所管辖的范围可大多了。改革后重新规划过，现在就是叫白石镇扶龙村了，管辖的范围也相应的小了。我就是扶龙人的
现在入扶龙、大寨有两条水泥路去：
1.在城东站坐信宜------>扶龙的汽车,是走白石线的.
2.在城东站坐信宜------->乐义的汽车,是走池洞六定、西洞、中洞的。

以前是叫扶龙白石的，现在具体名称叫中国广东省茂名市（地级市）信宜（县级市）白石镇扶龙村，我姓陈，祖籍也在扶龙，而我现在所在的大寨村就在扶龙村旁边的，方便的话，告诉我你的祖籍所在的小地名，我看能能帮你。

很少照照片，上图这个是扶龙小学的图片。白石镇扶龙村位置怀乡镇、洪冠镇的交界处，网上的地图画得都不尽准确。有多大、多少人就忘记啦，上次在计生办那有看到，但忘记了。我现在在外面。扶龙大部分是姓陈的，也有几户姓吴的（多是在六思涌村、地和涌村），你把你亲戚的姓名及一些详细资料发上来让大家帮你找找喽。

我父親13歲到馬來亞錫礦工作, 他在扶龙的哥哥, 叫吳真、吳桂(應已去世, 字可能有誤), 我父親叫吳標, 另一哥哥叫吳慶, 也到馬來亞務農 。

你好,我问了一下老一辈人是这样说的,以前叫扶龙白石是因为信宜还有另一个地方的镇下面的村是叫白石的,为了避免人家混淆,所以当时叫扶龙白石。也就是说当时的扶龙白石就是现在的白石镇，而不是只指扶龙这个村。整个白石镇除了扶龙这个村外还有18个村，我查了下全镇的电话号码本，吴姓主要集中在坡坪、乐义、坳头、利试这几个村，不知你父辈还记得是住在哪个村吗？我大嫂也是姓吴的，她婆家在坳头，听她说吴姓的祠堂是在坡坪村。或者你来到这边再查吴氏的族谱应该能找到你的亲戚。
你从深圳过来信宜市区有很多酒店住的，从信宜开车到白石镇40分钟车程。离白石最近的就是坳头村，几分钟就可以到达,其余那几个村都在附近。如果到时候有时间的话，我可以帮你带下路。

Arriving Beautiful City of Xinyi 信宜

It is a very interesting trip and has many surprises. We were helped by a group of internet friends. The 2 days were just amazing. This place is just beautiful, natural and green. The water is good and the air is very fresh. Bamboo trees are everywhere and the earth is red colored.

It took 10 hours for us to get to Xinyi which is not accessed by train or flights. Below are the difference between Shenzhen (深圳) and Maoming (茂名) bus stations (see maps above).

We didn’t expect the bus to Maoming has no seats and folks have to take off shoes inside. Below the bus hostess (left) was reading a book about ways to good life (幸福之路). From Maoming to Xinyi was one hour+ rural scenic ride in a bus with seats.


We booked a room in California Hotel (加州旅館) for less than $40 which is very nice and classy. A group of internet friends came to the room to meet us.


Motorcycles are the main transportation in town. So they took me to have a first night cruise to see Xinyi and stopped by the river bank for drinks until midnight.

The second day (2009-9-11) morning, we have a news reporter to drive us around the city. Below is the entrance to Jade-Kingdom Park (玉都公園) up on a hill. From the top of the park, we can view the city and a rainbow. The yellow building in city view is the landmark California Hotel where we were staying.

Xinyi is famous in education. They want their kids to be well educated and get a good job because this area is very poor. However, they have to go to big cities like Shenzhen to get jobs. Below is the big school complex called Education City (教育城) with a status of a famous educator. A hill is being leveled down (right picture) to expand the school complex. They said that trees and hills are more protected nowadays.


In afternoon we went to see the old town (鎮隆古城), about 18 km south of Xinyi, with the chairperson and vice-chair of Federation Returned Overseas Chinese, and ChenSS. We visited the palace of former Great Hong Kingdom 大洪國 (below 2-person pictures). People still live in these old buildings. It certainly needs innovation to protect this historic site.

We had dinner at a local restaurant and had a famous chicken dish.
